Ashburn, VA, February 7, 2023 –
The Foundation for Impact on Literacy and Learning, in partnership with Acme Markets Nourishing Neighbors Program, is excited to recognize the work toward ending hunger by student teams in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Teams across the Acme Markets’ communities worked to improve breakfast access and breakfast foods in their area. This part of the Explore.Act.Tell. Program provides special grants for teams who focus their hunger projects on Breakfast.
When a team of five homeschool students set their mind on fighting hunger in their community, great things happen!! We are excited to announce a First Place award of a $2500 grant to Feeding Hands Food Pantry on behalf of the STRIVE Team of New Jersey.
This team designed a Breakfast Food Drive. Working with their local Warren, NJ ACME Market, they set up a table outside the store. Customers could click on the QR code at the table and get a list of needed food items. As they shopped they could add items to their basket. Once they checked out, customers dropped the donated items at the table.
In a one-day event, students collected 378 breakfast food items from customers!! Store employees and customers also donated funds to add to the effort.
The STRIVE team worked with Feeding Hands Food Pantry for their project.

The Student Council of Northley Middle School is our 2nd place winner in Explore.Act.Tell. Breakfast. This team earned a $1500 grant that will be donated by Northley Middle School to The Kensington Project.
Student Council students led all of the homeroom classes in a Thanksgiving Breakfast Food Drive. Competing for a donut party, homerooms collected canned food items and breakfast food items. Students collected more than 750 food items. These were used to create Thanksgiving food packages for 10 families in the school. The remaining items were donated to a local food bank.
The team’s winning grant will go to the Kensington Project. Through the Kensington Project, people battling opioid addiction can get the help and support they need. The funds given will help with food expenses for food insecure locals battling opioid addiction.

Explore.Act.Tell.® teaches young people to become aware of food insecurity issues in their neighborhoods. They will practice skills needed to become good citizens and advocate for community involvement and service. Through four interactive lessons, students will create and implement a hunger solution project and develop a promotional PSA video.
